Analyzing the GS-1340 Standards
To work in the U.S. federal government as a meteorologist, one must satisfy the Office of Personnel Management's standards as defined by the GS-1340 form. Many in the meteorology community contend that these standards need to be reviewed and possibly revised. We have formed an ad-hoc committee to review the current requirements and to suggest changes where deemed appropriate.
For that, we would like your help. We have developed a survey that we'd like anyone who has the potential to teach, train, or hire meteorologists for federal positions to take. Also, the committee welcomes suggestions, comments, or questions about the standards or our process via email.
Take the Survey
We've collected feedback from federal meteorologists and academics to build this survey. Our goal is to have the community rate the skills they consider essential, recommended, or perhaps no longer recommended when looking at the existing standards and comparing those to needs in our discipline today.
The survey is anonymous, but please only submit your rankings once. Thank you for your response!
Send us feedback
The ad-hoc committee has representatives from throughout the government and academia, but we certainly won't think of everything. If you have ideas for other topics we should add to the survey, want to give us examples of why certain topics should be considered more or less strongly, or even just want to encourage hastening the update process, we welcome your feedback. You can email the committee at or by clicking the box below.
